Plot
Some building was in a fire.
Fireman Jahong jumped out of the building holding a kid only with safe straps.
He tried to get a safety car, but he couldn't make it and bumped with ladder car.
When he fell after he bounced from air cushion, he finds out he is okay.
Someone calls him three times, and grim reaper Dukchun and Haewonmak came out.
Jahong thought they were just people around fire scene, but they let Jahong know about his death.
He realized his death and asked them to make him meet his mother one last time,
but without his opinion, he sent to afterlife world.
Cuz he had saved many lives, he was treated as a 'special person' but he didn't think like that.
Waiting in front of the afterlife, Gangrim gave his hand to Jahong, but Jahong ignored it.
Gangrim explained about 7 trials of afterlife and it would proceed from the light ones.
They got murder hell to have their first trial.
Afterlife prosecutor suggested guilty because he had abandoned his colleague even though he had time to save him.
To make a objection, Gangrim showed them Life mirror and explained he saved 8 lives in there and his coworker asked him to save others first.
Finally, judge had conclusion of not guilty.
After that, they got Lazy hell.
He was the special person, so they would pass Jahong.
But Jahong said he was not lazy because of money.
King of the lazy hell said he was having wrong gods and tried to take him to the hell.
But Gangrim also had an objection saying he made money to save their family.
The king just let them go with pity.
While heading to Lie hell, some ghosts of hell came out, and Gangrim knew it was because one of Jahong's family turned into ghost with deep drudge.
Gangrim went to real life to investigate, and met Jahong's mother.
He realize ghost was his brother and he chased him but failed.
Jahong's brother, Suhong were serving military but there was rumor he run away.
Meanwhile
Jahong and two reaper got attacked by hell ghost, but Yeomra saved them and ordered them to fix this mess.
Jahong arrived at lie hell and had a trial.
Prosecutors said he had lied to coworker's children who lost their father and gave them a vain hope like their father is still alive.
Jahong said nothing about it, and the king of lie hell pronounced guilty to extract his tongue.
Gangrim who was in real world connected with Dukchun and made explanation.
Jahong did that not to let those children frustrated and even more they knew about it.
The king said not guilty according to Gangrim's explanation.
Gangrim kept investigating into Suhong's unit.
He disguised as an officer and investigated Captain Park who is superior but he denied everything and said he knew nothing about Suhong's run away.
Gangrim took a time searching and he knew there was accidental shooting by Private Won while Suhong was in guarding.
Captain Park didn't want to make a noise because he wanted to get promotion.
So he decided to bury him secretly.
While he was burying, Suhong was still alive and he buried alive.
Afterlife
Next hell must be a rescue hell but Jahong saves alot as a fireman so they could pass.
While they were heading to abusing hell, Jahong knew Suhong turned into ghost, so he had to meet his mother after all trials end.
Real life
Private Won was a soldier who has problem, so everyone in the unit didn't like him except for Suhong.
Private Won had a guilty about Suhong's death so he decided to kill himself.
Ghost Suhong showed up in front of Gangrim and asked him to save Private Won.
Suhong promised he would do whatever Gangrim wants, so Gangrim saved Private Won.
After life
Jahong was having trial of abusing hell.
He had abused his brother when Jahong was 17.
King of abusing hell said It was also related with moral hell.
Right before the king ordered to take him to the hell, Gangrim asked to have adding up penalty with moral hell.
Adding up penalty was mostly heavy penalty of all, so other reaper refused it but it was taken by the king.
Real life
Suhong was watching Jahong's trial and explained about that abusing.
At that time, their mother was very sick and Suhong was suffering malnutrition.
Jahong was despaired at the situation and made a plan to kill mother first and took a sleeping pill with his borther.
But Jahong couldn't do kill his mother and hesitate in front of her.
Suhong was trying to stop Jahong and Jahong abused him.
While they were talking, they found out Suhong's mother was in front of Suhong's military camp.
She was having cardboard saying her son is not a person who run away.
Captaion Park watched and push her back furiously.
Watching that, Suhong turned into the ghost again and made a huge tornado.
Gangrim and Haewonmak took him back barely.
Meanwhile After life
Jahong and Dukchun got into moral hell and was having a trial.
As soon as they got, King Yeomra pronounced guilty and ignored Dukchun's defense.
Yeomra got furious and showed them life mirror.
At that night, the night Jahong planned to kill his mother, she was actually awake and acted she was in sleep even though Jahong tried to kill her.
Knowing the truth, Jahong felt huge guilty about her.
He asked Yeomra to let him meet her one last time before whatever hell he would go.
Yeomra said he gave Jahong 15 years opportunity to apology but Jahong didn't.
At the moment Yeomra was going to judge, Gangrim made Suhong got into their mother's dream.
Suhong said and lied that he would go to heaven because he became a judge of heaven for her not to look for him anymore.
And he also said about that night and cried.
Their mother who couldn't talk in real started to say to Suhong in Dream.
She knew about that night, but sincerely she forgived them.
With her truthfully forgiveness, everyone, even prosecutors, got tears.
King Yeomra judged not guilty according to the afterlife law article 1 protocol 1 'after life wouldn't judge about the case which was truthfully forgiven in real life'.
Yeomra took final order Jahong to rebirth immediately.
Gangrim took Suhong to afterlife and Heawonmak didn't like it.
But Gangrim explain Suhong is new special person for them.
Haewonmak was embarrased because there was never a case ghost became a special person.
Review
This movie is based on same titled web cartoon.
As you all know, there was both side of filming cartoon.
Marvel's movie seems quite good example, but otherwise DC is......
But this movie is remade its story to make a film.
For example, there wasn't Jin gihan who is main on cartoon.
And to foreigners, this background is quite hard to understand.
It's background is even hard to understand korean too, cuz it has original hell fantasy of Korean Shamanism.
So let me explain more.
When the time someone die came, someone would watch their life like kaleidoscopic.
After all the life someone had passed in front of them, they would get in 7 hell.
7 hell is about lying, abusing, moral(family), murder, laziness, rescuing, betraying.
Each hell has their punishment, for example, lying hell's punishment is taking out a tongue.
And 7 hell's trial must finished within 49days.
This means each trial must finish a week.
Up to this day, Korean used to make a memorial ceremony every week until 49days after that.
If these 7 trials didn't finished in 49 days, 3 more trials would proceed for 3 years.
In Joseon Dynasty, they would have three year mourning period wearing mourning clothes.
So like these, there are 10 hells in after life so there are 10 kings.
And Reaper.
Reaper is quite similar to any other country.
The difference is that grim reaper is the one who takes soul from the dead, but korean reaper is more treated like officer working in hell.
They came after someone died and call their name 3 times to let some one understand their death.
There are old tales like reaper took wrong soul and got a scolding by Yeomra.
In Korean drama Goblin The Lonely and Great God, it says the one who was kill oneself became a reaper.
FYI Behind
1. This movie was filming vol1 and 2 at the same time, so it could save money.
2. Lee jungjae as Yeomra was contracted as a small role like cameo but his scene was getting more and more, and eventually he took 30 more shooting.
His makeup test got 3 days, and even more he was coming in preview show although he was just cameo.
3. Most of hell is modeling indoor set, so Ha jungwoo as Gangrim got lack of vitamin D.
4. If you are a big fan of Korean film, you will have a fun finding familiar face as a cameo.
(Ma dongseok, D.O of EXO, Jang gwang, Kim suahn, Kim haesuk, Lee kyeongyoung, Kim haneul, Yoo junsang, Kim sooro, Kim minjong....)
5. Actor Oh dalsoo, as one of the prosecutor, had MeToo problem so he wouldn't be in Vol 2.
6. There was Cookie clip which Home guard came out. It's not a just service Scene. This Scene would be on Vol 2.
